dining table "Lines under the forest"

The series "LINES UNDER THE FOREST" - a result of our Brazilian Artist-in-Residence program - is inspired by the gigantic hieroglyphics of geometric forms found in the Amazonian forest. The hieroglyphics are huge drawings in the ground made of low walls of stone and aremostly very simple forms of square or circular shapes. At least 450 of these enormous figures were discovered in the Seventies in the heart of the Amazonian forest due to the deforestation. Scientific evidencehas shown that these earthwork complex were made bythe Pre-Columbian peoples between 1000 and 3000 years ago by repetitive setting onfire.

We represent thegeoglyphics from Northern Brazil on the table top through the inlay work by using certified woods which come from the Amazonian forest: Roxinha and Muiracatiara. The streets which were built in recent years covering or partly destroying the geoglyphs are represented by using inserts of Plexiglass.

The table legs in the form of a pyramid symbolise a strong unification of woods coming from different origins which are an important part ofBrazil's history: Africa, Europe and South-America. The table legs in a neoclassical form, show the unification in a different way. Incomplete. Aso-called work in progress.

In summary, the table harmonises very different construction styles from the neoclassical to thecontemporary to the rudimentary and celebrates the beauty and difference of each single wood.By using only wax and natural oil, each piece of wood is left in it's natural state.
